Low, Christmas

Album Notes
Low: Alan Sparhawk (vocals, guitar); Mimi Parker (vocals, percussion); Zak Sally (bass).

Here's a shocker: Slow-core/low-core/no-core masters Low turn in the hippest Christmas disc since Silkworm pierced our hearts with IN THE BLEAK MID-WINTER. Completely without irony, Low perform five original and three traditional Christmas songs on this disc. And speaking of traditional, brace yourselves for the surprising Phil Spector-style original that opens up the disc, "Just Like Christmas," a cut that even features sleigh bells. But then there is the fuzzed-out, indie drone take on "Little Drummer Boy." And Mimi sings a beautiful, note-perfect rendition of "Blue Christmas" at a heroically lethargic tempo. It's all sincere and quite lovely.

Album Reviews
Q Magazine (1/00, p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...attains new heights....Quite possibly the only Christmas album - other than Phil Spector's - it's OK to like. Yes, that's good."
Alternative Press (1/00, p.92) - 4 out of 5 - "...an irony-free Christmas album that doesn't reek of opportunism from an unpreachy band is simplt a godsend. Regardless of your religious affiliation...it's easy to get swept away by the beauty of CHRISTMAS..."
Entertainment Weekly (12/10/99, p.112) - "...makes such traditional tunes as 'Little Drummer Boy' and 'Silent Night' beautifully morose. The band cloaks the covers and their own seasonally themed compostions in a lovely haze..." - Rating: A-
